The expression “Planet Earth” has its derivation from the heliocentric, Copernican revolution. Before this took place, the world was not considered to be a moving body. When heliocentrism became mainstream, the world we live on was then widely believed to be a planet, just as the other planets that were found to be orbiting the sun.
It then became a logical progression that the name for the “planet” we live on should be called “Earth”, as this was always what mankind was referred to be dwelling upon. The heliocentrist use of the word “Planet” gave rise to a new definition of the Earth, making the Earth the “sum total” of the world. However, throughout all of biblical (and human) history, the meaning of Earth has NEVER meant the “sum total” of the world, but only the LAND of the world.
When you realise that the Earth is the LAND only (and not the seas as well), this gives you the correct perspective on Biblical passages such as “the ends of the earth”, “the four corners of the earth”, “the circle of the earth”, “the midst of the earth”. It also explains biblically the division of the continents and why Jerusalem is considered the highest place on earth.
When you realise that the scriptural definition of the Earth is the LAND only, it is clear that the scriptures do not teach that the Earth is flat, but to the contrary. In fact, the writers of scripture thousands of years ago write things of the world which have only been discovered in the last two centuries, where one can only conclude they were inspired by the true and living God who created all things.
